There is a popular school of thought in the game design world that truly great video games should be as cinematic as possible. That when you play a game, you shouldn’t feel detached in a way that you firmly feel the game is separate from reality. That when you play a game, you should feel a deep emotional connection. Think games like The Last Of Us or any games in the BioShock series. They pull you in the same way a great movie grabs your heart and refuses to let go.

These games do exist, and they’re very effective in what they do. By making the conscious decision to make a game less about competition or trophy hunting and instead focusing on the elements of cinema, developers are able to create truly epic experiences for the gamers. These are my favorite kinds of games.
